The Female Perspective is the Prado Museum’s strongest commitment to making visible the role played by women in the world of modern art and particularly their impact on the shaping of royal collections.
This museum engagement to gender studies is manifested in the wide variety of lines of work that are addressed. Through thematic tours, exhibitions, publications, digital resources, audiovisual content, educational activities, scholarly meetings, and dedicated research, the project offers a critical and updated reading of the museum’s heritage from a gender perspective. These stories contribute meaningfully to building a more equal future by creating new narratives that highlight women’s achievements in art and reflect the diversity of experiences, perspectives, and voices that shape history.

Audiovisual content plays a central role in achieving this mission: a seven-part series—directed by Sonia Prior, with script by Noelia García, and co-produced with Fundación La Caixa— have not only enriched the scientific community in terms of research but also contributed to the dissemination and transfer of knowledge to a broader and more diverse audience.
A thought-provoking promotional video, directed by Carolina Molinari, poses a powerful question: What would the Prado Museum be like without works acquired by women? Through post-production techniques, viewers can see the vanishing of some of the collection’s most iconic and significant pieces, prompting reflection on the fundamental role that these women and their acquisitions have played in shaping the Museo del Prado’s collection.
